I’m often asked about my work life and sources of income. Usually, the answer is given by using 7 simple words. Then the questions immediately follow. When asked I respond, “I work from home, talking to people”.
Seriously. That’s it. I’ve worked in the travel, tech and sales industries all while wearing my pajamas. Before I go more in-depth, allow me to add a disclaimer. Generally a full-time or part-time from home has a hourly base pay that varies by state. Some companies will hire individuals with prior arrests, some won’t. Some companies will hire without experience, some won’t. You just need to apply and allow faith to take over. The same as working with a brick and mortar company. Additionally, the company likely has a call center or corporate office somewhere in the U.S.
If (When) you make it to the interview phase, the person conducting your interview will likely be at the office or call center.
Some positions require you to have your own equipment, i.e. desktop (not laptop) computer, USB headset, mouse, monitor, and keyboard. Additionally, you are asked to provide internet and home phone for most positions. High-speed internet and home phone are fairly common among those who work from home. The calls you take (customer service, technical support, travel bookings) are all routed to you using your home phone. The systems used to create, access or manage customer records requires a fast internet connection.
Before applying to a work from home position, you must be aware that some companies will ship you (company owned) computer equipment. Prepare for both scenarios. You can find this information by reading the position description when applying.
Technical Things to Know:
Internet: FIOS, Cable Internet preferred. DSL (if the company allows, ask first). Usually, speeds need to be minimum 5 Mbps download speed and 2 Mbps upload speed. (To check your internet speed, go to http://www.speedtest.net/). Most companies will not support dial-up, Satellite connections, “line-of-site”, or Wifi (e.g. 4G LTE) connections. Meaning the computer has to be plugged directly into the modem/router.
Phone: Traditional landline or digital voice service provided by your cable provider. Most companies DO NOT support internet-based phone services (Vonage, Magic Jack, Skype, Ooma, etc.).
Now that we’ve gotten that out-of-the-way, let’s get into the Top 5:
Although TeleTech offers many customer service jobs at call centers across the U.S., the company also hires at-home workers. Just look for the listings with “work from home” or “Remote” under “Location.” Pay: Indeed shows wages varying by position, with a range from $9.05 to $12.84 per hour. Glassdoor lists health and dental plans and a 401(k) as some of TeleTech’s benefits.
Convergys is consistently hiring work-from-home customer service representatives. If it’s not now, just keep an eye on its listings. Pay: What you’ll get paid depends largely on your location, but Glassdoor reports salaries in the $10 range.
Sykes hires agents to work from home throughout the United States and Canada. The company encourages you to “join the team of 6,000 agents across North America who accept inbound calls routed virtually to their homes.” Apply to work for the company here. Pay: Glassdoor shows wages ranging from $9.09 to $10.41 per hour. For U.S. employees, Sykes offers health care and 401(k) contributions.
Like many of these companies, VIPdesk Connect provides “outsourced customer service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.” Pay: Glassdoor shows pay of about $10 per hour, and the company says it provides paid vacation days; performance incentives; and (for full-time workers) medical, dental and vision insurance.
