While interviewing Cincinnati resident Tuhvon D’Neal my personality, of course, took over. His laid back persona balanced the conversation. His vision is precise and his sense of style distinct. Tuhvon describes himself as driven and goal oriented. His inspiration comes from his mother (taking care of home comes 1st – taking care of him, his siblings therefore surviving with no excuses) Homelessness and other struggles shaped his outlook on life. Originally from Bronx, NY, Tuhvon looks forward to setting home bases in both Philadelphia & Atlanta.
A graduate of Benedict College in South Carolina, Tuhvon works as a social worker that teaches HIV awareness in the social work field and would like to continue integrating his personal and professional life to grow. We laughed and talked for approximately an hour and here are a few snippets of the conversation
Samaya: I noticed that you said that you teach, what do you teach in particular?
Tuhvon: “Health education which specialize in STD’s and STI’s, which includes adults and children young as 13”
Samaya: Who are you, how do you want people to perceive you?
Tuhvon: “I am someone who is very driven and goal orientated and I believe in making a way out of no way”
Samaya: So where do your inspiration to be driven come from?
Tuhvon: “My mom is my inspiration of being so driven, she was a single mother, so for me she always worked, worked and worked to make sure that me and my siblings had.”
Samaya: Do you have someone or something that inspire you when it comes to your style?
Tuhvon: “I just go with how I am feeling, now my designs those usually come from life experiences. My first design was a blue and white raglan t-shirt and it said chocolate and popping on it, and for me it was a lot because I am the darkest child (in my family) so I was always teased for my complexion growing up, so for it was me, living in my truth and accepting who I am, and loving the skin that I am in”
Samaya: When you design do you draw them out, or do you have someone that does that for you?
Tuhvon: “I buy my shirts from a wholesaler in bulk, I went through different t-shirt fabrics and I design them on my iPad. And I go to my production guy where I give him the shirts, he then prints my designs and they get pressed on”
Samaya: Do you see yourself going to another level in regard of doing evening wear or even urban wear or will you stick with what you have been doing?
Tuhvon: “I am more on the urban side and street wear side”
Samaya: Do you have any projects coming up in the near future on your fashion or social side?
Tuhvon: “For my social work side, what I have coming up, pride is in June, so we always hold a huge testing event in Cincinnati with the organization that I am partnered with. On my work side, we have national black HIV awareness day so we are holding a testing site for that.”
Samaya: Do you have anything coming up on your fashion?
Tuhvon: “Yes, I have three photo shoots coming up in April, I have two here in Cincinnati and the third one is in Atlanta. The first one is for the eight new designs that I released on my website, the second is for my swimsuit line that I am going to drop in April. There will be high waist two-piece bikini and one piece for the women and short shorts for the guys.”
Samaya: Where do you see yourself ten years for now?
Tuhvon: “That’s a great question, ten years from now I see myself with no less than seven streams of income, I see myself going back to school to get another degree. And I also see myself having a storefront business either in Atlanta or somewhere on the East coast.”
Samaya: For our single readers and viewers – I know you mentioned you were single, are single and looking or just looking to stay single?
Tuhvon: “I am single and available, if I meet the right individual and they come along and willing to help me grow and help me focus on myself and I can help them focus on themselves.”
Samaya: Is there someone out there that you would love to me, for as celebrity wise?
Tuhvon: “I wish I could meet Viola Davis, I think I would die, I would also cry lol. Of course, there are certain designers that I wish I could meet Gucci, I would just fall over and die…or CoCo Chanel”
Samaya: Is there anything that you would like for your supporters to know about you?
Tuhvon : “Anything you feel that you want to do you can do it, it just takes an idea”
